COB vs SMD vs GOB LED Display: A Factory's Honest Comparison

Once you go below about P1.5, a fine-pitch quote forces a packaging choice — and today there are three, not two: SMD, GOB and COB. They can share the same LED chips and driver ICs, yet they protect those LEDs very differently, and the right one depends on how rough a life your screen will lead. Here is the honest comparison from the factory floor.

SMD, GOB and COB in one sentence each

SMD (Surface-Mounted Device) packages each red, green and blue LED into a tiny component that is soldered onto the board, leaving the beads slightly raised and exposed. It is the mature, dominant technology.

GOB (Glue on Board) takes a finished SMD board and seals the whole surface under a clear protective resin, armoring the beads without changing the underlying SMD process.

COB (Chip on Board) skips the individual packages entirely: the bare LED chips are mounted straight onto the board and encapsulated under one flat resin layer.

Think of it as a protection ladder

The three are best understood as rising levels of protection. Bare SMD leaves the beads exposed — cheapest, but vulnerable to knocks, fingers and moisture. GOB adds a glue coat over that same SMD board, so the beads can no longer be chipped off and the surface becomes waterproof, dustproof and washable. COB goes furthest, removing the discrete packages so there is nothing raised to protect in the first place — the most integrated and durable construction, and the best at very fine pitches.

Where COB pulls ahead

  • Durability: nothing sticks up to be knocked off — COB shrugs off finger-pokes, cleaning and scrapes, and dominates ultra-fine-pitch walls the public can touch.
  • Contrast and viewing angle: the matte resin cuts reflection, deepening blacks, with a wide, uniform viewing angle (often 175°).
  • Heat dissipation: mounting chips directly on the board spreads heat better, aiding stability and lifespan at very fine pitches.
  • Fine-pitch headroom: COB scales to the smallest pitches (P0.4–P1.5) more comfortably than SMD, where beads get too small to place reliably.

Where GOB is the sweet spot

GOB earns its place when you need SMD's price and easy sourcing but the screen will take a beating. Because it is standard SMD underneath, it keeps a lower cost and a broad supply base, while the resin coat adds:

  • Impact and scratch resistance — ideal for LED floors, stage risers and touring panels that get walked on, packed and knocked.
  • Water, dust and moisture sealing — the surface wipes clean and shrugs off humidity.
  • Anti-static and anti-UV protection, plus a wider viewing angle than bare SMD.

It is why our LED dance floors and many rental cabinets ship with GOB armor: the beating they take would destroy bare SMD, while COB would be more than the job needs.

Where SMD still wins

  • Price: for the same pitch, bare SMD is the cheapest. If the wall is out of arm's reach in a controlled room, you may be paying for protection you never use.
  • Easiest repair: a dead bare-SMD bead is reworked individually; GOB is repairable too but the glue makes it slower, and COB is repaired by whole module.
  • Proven from P1.5 up: most indoor stage, retail and all outdoor screens run bare SMD — mature, abundant and entirely sufficient.

The price question

Price climbs with protection: SMD is the baseline, GOB adds a modest premium for the coating step, and COB carries the highest premium for its chip-level process. The trick is to buy only the protection your environment demands — GOB armor is money well spent on a walkable floor and wasted on a wall hung out of reach, while COB's premium pays off in an ultra-fine boardroom or a touchable interactive display and is overkill for a standard outdoor sign.
