Short answer: most outdoor LED displays need 5,000 to 6,000 nits of brightness. A screen that faces direct sun, sits behind glass, or competes with reflective surroundings needs 6,500 to 8,000 nits or more. Indoor screens, by contrast, only need 600 to 1,500 nits.

Brightness is the specification buyers most often get wrong on outdoor LED displays — too low and the screen washes out at noon; too high and you overpay, burn extra power and shorten the panel's life. What is a nit?

A nit (cd/m², candela per square meter) measures how much light a screen emits per unit of area. Higher nits mean a brighter screen. LED displays are rated in nits; do not confuse this with lumens, which measure the total output of a lamp or projector. A typical phone screen peaks around 800 nits, a bright television around 1,000, and an outdoor LED billboard 6,000 or more.

Why outdoor needs so much more than indoor

The screen does not compete with darkness — it competes with the sky. At midday, ambient daylight can exceed 10,000 lux, and a screen has to out-shine the sunlight reflecting off its own surface to stay readable. Indoors, ambient light rarely passes 500 lux, so a fraction of the brightness produces the same perceived contrast. This is why an indoor-grade panel installed outdoors looks grey and lifeless by 10 a.m., even though it looked brilliant in the showroom.

Why brighter is not always better

Peak brightness is a headroom figure, not a running value. A well-built outdoor screen carries an ambient-light sensor and dims automatically — running at full 6,000 nits after dark would blind passers-by and, in many cities, breach light-pollution rules. Three reasons not to over-spec:

  • Lifespan: LEDs driven near maximum current continuously fade faster. Brightness you never use still costs you diode life.
  • Power and heat: higher brightness draws more current and generates more heat, raising running cost and cooling demand.
  • Regulation: many municipalities cap nighttime luminance for roadside screens; auto-dimming to a few hundred nits at night is often a legal requirement, not a nicety.

The right spec is enough peak brightness for the worst-case daylight at your site, paired with automatic dimming for everything else.

How to verify a brightness claim

Brightness numbers on spec sheets are easy to inflate. Before you order:

  1. Ask for brightness after calibration, not the raw un-calibrated maximum. Calibration to uniform color and grayscale typically costs 10–20% of peak brightness — an honest figure is the calibrated one.
  2. Request a meter reading on a full white field at the display surface, measured in nits (cd/m²). A short video of the meter on a running sample is reasonable to ask for.
  3. Match the number to your worst case using the table above. If a supplier quotes 4,000 nits for a west-facing, glass-fronted plaza screen, that panel will disappoint by afternoon.
