Boardroom and Control-Room LED Walls: Pixel Pitch at 8 ft, and COB vs GOB vs SMD
With the nearest seat about 8 ft (2.4 m) from the wall, specify P0.9 to P1.25 when viewers read text and spreadsheets, and P1.5 only for video-led content. For walls that people touch, clean or brush past, choose COB, or GOB over SMD, not bare SMD. Then confirm resolution, low-grey image quality, redundancy and power from the quoted cabinet data.

What pixel pitch do I need if the nearest seat is 8 ft away?

At 8 ft (2.4 m), P1.25 is the coarsest pitch that stays comfortable for text-heavy meetings, and P0.9 is the safe choice when front-row viewers read spreadsheets or small UI text. A rough rule is that the minimum comfortable viewing distance in meters is about equal to the pixel pitch in millimeters. For a result where pixels are effectively invisible, multiply the distance by two to three, which gives roughly P0.8 to P1.2 at 2.4 m.

P1.5 can work at 8 ft for video, dashboards with large graphics, or rooms where most seats are much further back. The full method is in how to choose LED display pixel pitch.

Will the wall have enough resolution for the content?

Check resolution from the cabinet count, not from the pitch alone. MCVISUAL fine-pitch cabinets measure 600×337.5 mm. A 5×5 wall is 3.0 × 1.69 m (about 9.8 × 5.5 ft):

  • P1.25 (480×270 px per cabinet) gives 2400×1350 px, above Full HD.
  • P0.9375 (640×360 px per cabinet) gives 3200×1800 px, enough for multi-window layouts.

If the processor has to scale content to a non-native canvas, fine text softens. Ask the supplier for the exact canvas size and the scaling plan.

COB, GOB or SMD for a wall people touch?

Use COB or GOB wherever hands, chairs, cleaning cloths or presenters reach the screen surface. Bare SMD leaves each LED package raised and exposed, and one knock can remove a pixel. GOB seals a finished SMD board under clear resin. COB mounts the bare chips on the board and encapsulates them under one flat layer, so nothing sticks up.

  • COB: the most durable surface and the most headroom at very fine pitch. The MCVISUAL COB Series covers P0.78 to P1.5625 with a 170° viewing angle.
  • GOB: SMD economics with a protected surface. The T3-PRO uses GOB at P1.25 to P1.95.
  • SMD: the lowest cost, and suitable when the wall is out of reach, such as mounted above a credenza or behind a rail.

The general trade-offs are covered in COB vs SMD vs GOB: a factory's honest comparison.

How bright should a boardroom LED wall be?

Indoor boardrooms and control rooms rarely need more than the roughly 600-nit maximum of MCVISUAL's fine-pitch cabinets. These walls usually run well below maximum. The deciding test is image quality at reduced brightness: ask for a demo or video of dark grey ramps and skin tones at the brightness the room will actually use.

For video calls and broadcast cameras, specify a high refresh rate. MCVISUAL fine-pitch cabinets are specified at 3840 Hz with 16-bit grey scale.

What does a 24/7 control room need beyond the panel?

Specify dual power supplies and dual receiving cards where a single failure must not blank a section of the wall. Keep controller configuration backups off site, and hold same-batch spare modules on site. Front maintenance matters when the wall mounts flush and there is no service corridor. The COB and X3 cabinets are front-serviceable at 27.5 mm deep.

Plan circuits and cooling from the quoted power figures. The COB Series is specified at 420 W/m² maximum and 80–150 W/m² average. The X3 is 350 W/m² maximum and 100 W/m² average. Ask for the figure at your content's typical brightness, not only the peak.

What should the specification sheet for the quote include?

Send one brief with the nearest and furthest seat distances, the wall size or cabinet count, the content type (text, video, dashboards), camera use, whether people can reach the surface, operating hours, redundancy needs, the mounting condition and site power. The U.S. LED wall project brief lists every field, and the CSV version can be filled in and returned with the request.

For a meeting-room wall that must stay readable with the room lights on, see the Shanghai government meeting room, where a COB P1.5625 LED wall replaced a projector in a room that keeps its lights on.
